3 Budget-Friendly Ways to Boost Your Dog’s Oral Health (No Toothbrush Required!)
Your easy guide to cleaner teeth, fresher breath, and a happier dog!
Keeping your dog’s teeth and gums healthy is one of the best ways to improve your dog’s overall health and longevity! But let’s face it - brushing your dog’s teeth isn’t always fun, for you or your dog.
But did you know there are simple, affordable ways to improve your dog’s dental health, without ever picking up a toothbrush? I’m sharing my top three budget-friendly tips for cleaner teeth and healthier gums, plus three things to avoid that could be doing more harm than good.
1. Raw Meaty Bones – Nature's Toothbrush
Raw meaty bones are hands-down the best way to keep your dog’s teeth sparkling clean and their gums in tip-top shape. If your pup struggles with plaque, tartar, or that classic “dog breath,” try introducing raw meaty bones into their diet. Not only do these bones help scrape away plaque build-up naturally, but they also mimic how dogs would care for their teeth in the wild with a species-appropriate diet.
Added bonus: Raw meaty bones have lots of other health benefits for dogs too - including helping to naturally express anal glands, providing mental stimulation for bored or anxious dogs, and giving your pooch an added vitamin boost!
2. Natural Treats & Supplements
There’s a world of natural treats out there that do wonders for doggy dental hygiene! Think beef tendons, muscle sticks, duck necks, and more!
On top of that, some supplements can support oral health - my favourite is pure, natural seaweed. Not only does it help clean teeth, but it also benefits your dog’s skin, coat, and offers anti-inflammatory properties for those with itchy skin.
Added bonus: Lots of natural treats are made from whole, minimally processed ingredients and are very nutritionally dense, as well as being lower in sugars and saturated fats, reducing the risk of obesity and pancreatitis.
But beware: Not all treats and supplements live up to their claims. Always check the ingredients and do your research. (And read to the end to see my tips on what to avoid).
3. Lick Mats & Slow Feeders
Lick mats and slow feeders aren’t just fun - they’re functional! These feeding tools encourage your dog to lick persistently, which boosts saliva production. Saliva helps wash away tiny, leftover food particles and bacteria, giving your pup’s mouth a natural cleanse every time they indulge in their fave enrichment toy!
Added bonus: The action of continuous licking helps to soothe dogs, naturally boosting serotonin levels. Also, the different textures and uneven surfaces make it more intriguing and challenging for dogs, keeping them engaged for longer!

What to Avoid for Better Oral Health
· Dental Sticks & Veggie Chews: Many of these contain high levels of starch, flour, and sugar - which are proven to actually worsen dental problems instead of helping. Always read the ingredients!
· Deer Antlers: While popular and long-lasting, antlers are much harder than bones and can cause tooth fractures or breakages (and unnecessary vet bills). In the wild, dogs would eat the soft antler velvet, not the hard antlers left behind.
With these simple swaps and a little extra care, you and your dog can say goodbye to dental woes. Give these tips a try and watch your dog’s smile shine!
Always supervise your dog with treats, raw meaty bones and at meal times.
